How much does it cost to install a Fibreglass Roof in 2025

Looking to have a fibreglass roof installed? In this post, we look at the potential costs involved and how much you would expect to pay in 2025 for professional or DIY installation.

If you’re considering a new fibreglass roof for your property in the UK in 2025, it’s important to understand the costs involved. Fibreglass roofs, or GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) roofs, are popular due to their durability, weather resistance, and low maintenance. However, like any roofing solution, the costs can vary depending on several factors.

Factors influencing the costs

Several factors can impact the overall cost of installing a fibreglass roof:

  • Type of System: A number of different fibreglass roofing systems are available with different application properties. Some need to be on fresh decking while others can be applied directly to the existing substrate reducing waste removal and additional labour costs.
  • Roof Size and Shape: Larger roofs naturally require more materials and labour, increasing costs. Roofs with complex shapes or multiple angles may require more work, which can also drive up the price.
  • Location: Costs can vary significantly depending on your location within the UK. For example, roofing costs in London and the South East are generally higher due to increased labour costs and demand.
  • Quality of Materials: Higher quality fibreglass materials can offer greater durability and a longer lifespan but will come at a higher cost. Premium finishes or added features like non-slip coatings can also add to the overall expense.
  • Preparation Work: If your existing roof needs to be removed or repairs are required to the underlying structure, this can add to the cost. The presence of insulation or additional layers may also increase the price.
  • Labour Costs: Labour rates vary across the UK, with more experienced roofers or those in high-demand areas charging more. The job's complexity will also affect labour costs, as more intricate roofs require more time and expertise.
  • Access and Scaffolding: Easy access to the roof will reduce costs, while difficult access, requiring scaffolding or additional safety measures, will increase the total expense.

Average Cost of a Fibreglass Roof Installation in 2025

The cost of installing a fibreglass roof in the UK can vary widely based on the size and complexity of the roof, the quality of materials used, and the location of your property. On average, you can expect to pay between £80 to £150 per square metre for a fibreglass roof installation. This price typically includes materials, labour, and basic finishing. This means that for an average single garage roof (around 18 square metres), the total cost would range from £1,440 to £2,700.

Potential Cost Savings

While the initial outlay for a fibreglass roof may seem high, there are potential cost savings over time. Fibreglass roofs are known for their durability and low maintenance requirements, which can save money on repairs and replacements over the long term. They typically have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years or more. A properly installed fibreglass roof with appropriate insulation can improve your home’s energy efficiency, potentially reducing heating and cooling costs. Additionally, they are highly resistant to weather damage, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs due to leaks or storm damage.

Getting Installation Quotes

To get an accurate quote for your fibreglass roofing project, it’s best to obtain quotes from several reputable roofing contractors in your area. Ensure the quotes include all materials, labour, and any additional costs such as scaffolding or disposal of old roofing materials. Be wary of quotes that seem unusually low, as they may not include all necessary elements or may use substandard materials.

DIY GRP Roofing Costs

While installing a fibreglass roof can be a DIY project, it requires thorough preparation, a solid understanding of the process, and careful attention to safety. If you’re comfortable with these requirements and confident in your abilities, you can successfully do it yourself.

For this example, we'll take the average size for a single garage in the UK, typically around 3 metres wide by 6 metres long, giving us an area of 18m². We'll leave out the cost for the foundations of the roof ie decking, insulation etc and just focus on the core system materials and accessories.

There's typically very little foot traffic on a roof of this size so we can go for the 450g fibreglass reinforcement which uses less base resin making it slightly cheaper and we'll select the 20m² GRP Roofing Kit in the standard dark grey finish to give us a bit of extra materials just in case. For the trims, we're going to need some drip trims, edge trims and wall fillets for our imaginary garage along with some simulated lead flashing. Flexibility isn't an issue on roofs of this size so we don't need expansion joints but if your roof is over 50m² that's something that you will need to consider, check out our guide on expansion joints and if you need them for your fibreglass roof.

For everything else we're going to need we've added a medium tool kit which contains all the tools including rollers, buckets, brushes, acetone and a catalyst measuring dispenser. To this, we'll add a tube of Sharkseal and some clout nails to bond and fix the trims into position.
